Magical Tetris Challenge Review

Originally a release on the N64 many months ago this odd mix of Disney and the Tetris license sold decently for the system.  Finally a version of the game has been released on the Gameboy Color.  This version of Tetris introduced many new forms of puzzle pain not yet experienced in this series of games. This game features seven different game modes to tool around in, a battery to save your progress, link cable support, and is only a Gameboy Color title.

Graphics The graphics of the in game tetris modes and the overworld and menus of the game are drawn well and colored in nicely too.  In the overworld of the quest mode  game of Star Wars galaxy heroes hack  we are given a beautifully illustrated and colorized version of a disney world covered in its popular characters such as Mickey, Donald, his nephews, Goofy, and more.  When you(Mickey) approach another person you can talk with them on a new screen with stills of the characters before going into a mini game.  While the graphics are not in high color mode, they look very good and feel like the old disney cartoons.  In a tetris game you will have the typical tetris graphics, though in the bottom right of the screen you will see your character struggle with gears as you manipulate tetris pieces.

Rating: 4.5SoundThe sound of this game is pretty much as good as the graphics of the game. The music you will hear while you play the game is pretty upbeat and cheery, yet it tends to get monotonous pretty quickly.  A good example of the looping the audio will do is as easy as listening to the 10 second cycling of the title theme.

While other tunes aren't that short after awhile they will start to feel that way.  The sound effects though feel like classic disney effects mixed with peppy, yet somewhat typical Gameboy level beeps.  The audio in the big picture is pretty good and the repetitiveness isn't such a bad thing.

Rating: 4.0 Theme & FunThe theme of the game is Tetris, the fun of the game is the challenge and the intermixing of Disney classic characters into the fold.  This game while it does have its original classic Tetris mode also incorporates six new modes of play to torture you with (literally).  The game adds quite a bit to the value of the game as it can appeal to a wider range of people looking for a Disney game or more challenges from the old school Tetris style game.

I never in my dreams thought I would find a game with a story mode, let alone one that could draw you into playing the game more, but this is it. Rating: 4.0Play ControlThe play control of this title in negotiating the menus and moving around the quest mode of the game is done really well.  The controls are very responsive and get you where you need to go.  A funny effect though I noticed in the quest part of the game is to get Mickey to talk to anyone he needs to knock on doors, walls, and even people?  The original controls of tetris have also been for the most part retained in the gaming mode but I did find a nasty flaw in my opinion.

In all tetris games when the piece falls and makes contact it ill lock in place.  On this tetris title it behaves like Columns and Puyo Puyo style games as yuo get a little time before it locks so you can move it over.  This I have no idea if it was an intended feature, but to anyone who has played tetris for as long as I have will be throughly annoyed.  Often I found when in a heated move I'd slide a piece over when the next one should have been on the way down causing terminal screw ups, bad move Capcom.

Rating: 3.0 Challenge This game while cutesy in appearance is hard as nails in a few places.  While the standard tetris is as it always was, though yov have to deal with that\ nasty drop problem it gets harder.  There are also six other modes of play to deal with such as a mode where you can dump pieces on your enemy's board like in the old tetris vs. play.  One of the worst modes is a color matching mode on the bottom of the screen.  There are two rows, the bottom with a pattern, and the one above you need to match by removing lines with the last piece over the tile you need to change the color of to match below.

There is even a standard tetris mode, but called magical tetris in which oddly mishapen pieces of over four block will come down that will cause you trouble.  These pieces can be dumped on you, or you can return them to the enemy.  In any of the competing modes you need to have one person have their pieces spill over the top of the screen.

Rating: 5.0 Replay Value and Closing Notes:The replay value of this game is derived from the original replay value of Tetris.  More value comes from all the different modes of play with this game allowing you to have lots of modes of play to experience giving the game a longer lasting appeal if you like the modes.

I for one found the game not that bad, but I really couldn't forgive it for the change in locking the pieces when they drop.  I also found myself driven past the point of anger with that color matching game mode.  I personally would suggest a rent before a buy, and I feel good I didn't get it myself, but
don't let this ending sway you.  As with doctors get a second opinion.
